Ranking Member Michaud’s Statement on VA Subpoena

Washington, D.C.  – The House Veterans’ Affairs Committee voted this morning to issue a subpoena to the Department of Veterans Affairs for documents – electronic and written – containing information pertaining to the destruction of a waitlist within the Phoenix VA Health Care System.  The subpoena, which procedurally was addressed to the Secretary, covers only documents between April 9, 2014 and May 8, 2014.  The subpoena issued today is not for individuals, and does not compel any VA officials to appear before the Committee. The scope of the subpoena allows the Office of Inspector General’s investigation to continue unimpeded.

Congressman Mike Michaud (D-ME), Ranking Member on the Committee, issued the following statement:

“I supported this subpoena because we need to get to the bottom of what happened in Phoenix. Today’s subpoena order was an unfortunate, but necessary step in that direction.  The Committee tried to work with the VA to get answers to our questions, but ultimately, the Department’s reply fell short of a complete response.  The vote this morning was unanimous because Members are frustrated.  The VA left the Chairman and Committee members no other option.

“Our veterans deserve nothing but the best – and that absolutely includes receiving timely, safe and high-quality healthcare.  I look forward to a full and complete report from the Office of the Inspector General when its review is complete.”
